DON DÁMASO AND THE EL HIERRO DRUM

BY:

If—like me—you love discovering the most curious traditions, you should meet Dámaso, an artisan and maker of the most beautiful and famous drums anywhere on the Canary Islands. Entering his workshop is like entering the past, the smell of wood, of leather and iron reminded me briefly of my grandfather.

The most exciting part was definitely hearing how he has made Canary Islanders fall in love with the music from his drum for the past thirty years and how, every four years, all the natives of El Hierro and foreigners visiting the island come to see the wonderful Bajada de la Virgen procession, where this instrument is the star as it lends rhythm to the dances of the most devout pilgrims.
